When a group of people practice
something for two thousand years, the expectation is that they'd
eventually get whatever it was that they were committed to doing right.
But the fact is that we as individuals and as a corporate community are
still struggling with many of the issues that plagued the early church.
My goal in this book was to take a fresh look at the book of
Acts to help the reader gain a deeper understanding of how God moved in
the early church and what that means for us today.
I'm convinced that today's church is
grappling with the same core issue that the first church struggled
with: We don't really want
to live out the two great loves that Jesus taught, not always, and
especially not when it isn't convenient. I'm convinced that one of the
Holy Spirit's primary roles in the book of Acts was to keep nudging the
early saints into truly loving each other.
This issue of the church's obedience
to the
challenging of loving God and people is more critical to the health of
the church than any of the debates swirling around the church today.
It's certainly the hardest part of my relationship with God. I hope
you'll join me as I struggle to work these two loves into my
relationships.
